This small addition captures 30″ of floor space underneath the existing eave overhang. This tiny addition allowed for a new bank of entry storage, pantry, work surface, and kitchen cabinetry, easing the flow at their back door. The new cabinetry is all finished in vertical grain fir, riffing on the home’s original fir trim. The countertop is a quartz also matching their existing kitchen peninsula.

This crafty bump-out takes its form and logic from the window seats designed by MLTW that flank the living spaces of the original condominium projects at Sea Ranch, Sonoma County, CA.

The small scope of this addition allowed the homeowners to also include a limited renovation to their existing home: they sanded down and refinished their flooring, added a dishwasher and added a skim coat to their original plaster ceilings– ready for a fresh coat of paint. The interior color scheme selection took a cue from the painter, Charles Biederman’s own studio where different walls were painted only slightly different hues to maximize daylighting and simulate even lighting.
