Utsuwa is a Japanese term with dual meaning. It is generally used to mean a vessel, container, or utensil, like ceramic bowls or cups. However, it is also used to figuratively convey a person’s capacity, ability, or generosity.
A combination of material form-finding, paired with an appreciate for the craft and work of a dear friend, this family of lighting sconces will find it’s home in several upcoming project.
Phil Docken earned his BA in Studio Arts at St Olaf College and spent 5 years at Pond Farm studying with Bauhaus trained ceramics master Marguerite Wildenhain. Docken’s work extends through pottery, ceramic sculpture, bronze casting, painting, photography, video, and film.
Phil and Koto met in 2015, while working in ceramics at Minneapolis Community & Technical College.
